Gavilan College student selected for prestigious $20,000 Scholarship

Hollister native Liset Vargas was selected as the Gavilan College recipient of the prestigious 2007 Karl S. Pister Leadership Award, a $20,000 scholarship to attend University of California, Santa Cruz in the Fall 2007.

The Karl S. Pister Leadership Scholarship was established to help the most promising students from 13 regional community colleges transfer to U.C. Santa Cruz. Recipients receive a $10,000 scholarship for each of two years, as well as support from a strong academic networking program and assistance finding paid summer work experience in a field that complements their studies. The program, designed by former U.C.S.C. Chancellor Karl S. Pister, recognizes students who have made a demonstrated commitment to assisting and improving the lives of others, who have overcome adverse socioeconomic circumstances, and who might not otherwise be able to attend U.C.S.C. for financial reasons. Candidates are nominated by the presidents of each of 13 regional community colleges, and recipients are selected by the U.C.S.C. Chancellor in consultation with the Leadership Opportunity Awards Program Screening Committee.

A Dean's and President's List scholar, Liset will transfer to U.C.S.C. with a major in biology and long term plans to purse a degree in Pharmacology. As a first generation college student, Liset's ultimate goal to help people in underrepresented communities. While at Gavilan College, Liset has participated in the Pre-Health Club, which is designed to help students who are pursing careers in the medical field, by connecting them with professionals in the medical field. As a member of the MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement) program, Liset has also served as a tutor in mathematics, chemistry and biology.
