Gavilan College announces 2008 Community Spirit Awards for Morgan Hill

WHO: Individuals: Michael Brookman and Earl Liebich; Business: The Thomas Kinkade Company; Organization: American Red Cross, SCVC

Michael Brookman is a corporal in the Morgan Hill Police Department. He shas served on a number of non-profit boards including Leadership Morgan Hill, Morgan Hill Community Foundation, San Martin incorporation committee, Mt. Madonna YMCA, and volunteers actively with Leadership Morgan Hill and Henry Coe State Park.

Earl Liebich is a realtor with Coldwell Banker. He is active in the Morgan Hill chamber of Commerce and is now the Chair of the Chamber Ambassadors program. He has volunteered at the Gilroy Garlic festival for many years in team and leadership positions, and serves on the Board and Steering committee of the Poppy Jaspar film festival. He is active in the United States Tennis Association and Gilroy Tennis Clubs. Earl has a special blood type, and donates blood for premature infants, bone marrow transplant recipients, and AIDS patients.

The Thomas Kinkade Company encourages employee volunteerism and has a policy of paying employees wages on days that they volunteer in the community. They coordinate a Volunteer Day each year, through which they choose a different organization to benefit. they are well-know for donating artwork to non-profit organizations for fundraisers, Mr. Kinkade has created new works specifically to benefit organizations, such as the Salvation Army. Locally they have contributed to Leadership Morgan Hill, The Community Foundation, The Chamber of Commerce, and many others.

The American Red Cross, Santa Clara Valley Chapter provides comfort, support, accommodations and friendship to residents of the community following natural disasters, fires, and other tragic events. they have been very much in evidence during local wildfires and recently helped a member of the Gavilan College staff who lost her home to a fire. They mobilize after earthquakes and other events, and help local volunteers to provide assistance in other areas during natural disasters (such as the hurricanes in Texas/Louisiana.) They help those who are homeless and also help families get messages to members of the armed forces.

WHAT: Will be recognized with Community Spirit Awards, presented by the Board of Trustees of Gavilan College. The awards were created in 1999 through Board Resolution 739, in order to promote and recognize service to the communities Gavilan College serves. A representative committee of the campus community reviews nominations and selects the
award winners. Anyone may nominate an individual, organization, or business in the community for an award. In all, three sets of awards are given out annually, in Morgan Hill. in Gilroy, and in San Benito County.

Last years winners in Morgan Hill were Laura Brunton, Anritsu, and the Teachers Aid Coalition
