Gavilan College Computer Graphics & Design Students Sweep Solid Modeling Awards at State Fair

WHO:  Four Gavilan College Computer Graphics & Design (CGD) students and their CGD instructor, Colette McLaughlin

WHAT: Are being honored with Golden Bear California State Fair 2009 Awards in Industrial Arts & Technology Education for their Solid Model Rendering and Computer Aided Design (CAD) Multipart Assembly Drawings.

Gavilan Instructor Dr. McLaughlin described her appreciation, “This State Fair Competition enables students in career technology education courses to showcase their skills. Students earning these honors need to apply academic knowledge to creatively solve real world problems by designing products then communicating their solutions using complex computer graphic programs. While it’s a thrill that Gavilan CGD students will be recognized at the State level, it’s even a greater honor to be part of our State’s community colleges career technology departments because nothing can compete with providing students with skills needed to access high skilled high paid jobs and succeed in competitive technical departments within universities.”

The Gavilan College students entered two solid modeling divisions of the State Faiir that were open to all California Community Colleges' career technology education students who use 3D CAD modeling programs, such as SolidWorks.

State fair judges selected Gavilan College students and their instructor for seven honors including (3) first place, (2) second place and (1) third place rosettes and (1) honorable mention certificate.

Gavilan students’ drawings were created in their Computer Graphics and Design class using SolidWorks, a popular industry standard parametric computer-aided-drafting 3D modeling program. Student projects represent the diverse career objectives of Gavilan CGD students.

WHEN: August 20 at 5:30 p.m. in Sacramento, CA

DETAILS: Robert Vaca of Gilroy, a reentry student with a strong engineering background, was honored with a First Place rosette for a pump that he designed to provide cost effective clean water for individuals in third world countries and an Honorable Mention certificate for his tractor design.

Justin Young of Gilroy, enrolled in CGD as part of his general education, plans to transfer to a four-year college to become a minister. He was awarded a First Place rosette for his design and assembly model of a desk.

Travis Lober of Gilroy, who is currently employed as a construction project manager and plans to transfer to an industrial engineering university, earned two Second Place rosettes, for a robotic “spider” tool cart he designed to deliver equipment to workers in tight spaces and an equally complex engine he designed.
