Gavilan College presents Community Spirit Awards for 2009

Gavilan College has announced the winners of the 2009 Community Spirit Awards. This set of awards is presented annually to individuals, organizations, and businesses who contribute to the communities within the Gavilan Joint Community College. Three sets of awards are presented each year, in Morgan Hill, Gilroy, and San Benito County.

For 2009, the Community Spirit Awards  go to:
Morgan Hill: Safeway Marketplace; Jona Denz Hamilton; St. Catherine's Reach-Out program
Gilroy: Arteaga's Supermarket, Marlowe Brinson and KC Adams; The Gilroy Garlic Festival Association
San Benito County: K&S Properties; Jim West; The Hollister Downtown Association

Morgan Hill awards were presented on October 1 at the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce Breakfast.
The Gilroy Awards will be presented at the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce Breakfast on October 21; 6:45 a.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn
San Benito County Awards will be presented at the Hollister Downtown Association quarterly breakfast on October 28 at Paine's Restaurant in Hollister

About the Award-Winners:
SAFEWAY: Safeway Marketplace in Morgan Hill has served the community for over 30 years. During this time the grocery store has been an excellent corporate citizen, providing help to nonprofits, schools, churches, and community events. They donate gift certificates to schools, donate bakery items to St. Catherine’s, and provide monetary support to July 4th Festivities, the Mushroom Mardi Gras, and Taste of Morgan Hill. As co-presenting sponsor of Taste of Morgan Hill, Safeway supplies food, money, a refrigerated semi truck, and more for the weekend.

ST CATHERINES REACH OUT: The nomination states: “Over 25 years ago a concerned group of Morgan Hill citizens teamed up with the local food banks to set up a food distribution center for the poor and needy of Morgan Hill and San Martin.” In their first month, they served 40 families and individuals.  In July of this year, Reach Out served over 500 families and individuals. It is staffed completely by volunteers who spend hours gathering the food, packing it, and distributing it, providing each client with two full grocery bags every month.

JONA DENZ HAMILTON: From her nomination form: “Jona is a community servant in every sense of the word….” with a “…broad spectrum of community caring and voluntarism in both Morgan Hill and South San Jose.” Some of the activities for which she is being recognized include: parent volunteer at Los Paseos Elementary School, Martin Murphy Middle School, and Sobrato High School; Morgan Hill Teachers Aid Coalition; South Valley Athletic Foundation, Master of Ceremonies for South Valley Athletic Foundation South Valley Wine Auction; emcee for Children’s Health Council; Morgan Hill Chamber Health and Wellness Fair, organizing and hosting Santa Teresa Community Fests, announcing at Morgan Hil Haru Matsuri Festival, hosting Morgan Hill Community Foundation Philanthropy Day , South San Jose PACT, and more.

ARTEAGA'S SUPERMARKET: Arteaga's adds to the community with special events, including organizing and hosting the Community Health Fair for which they won a Champions for change Award from Network for a Healthy California in 2008. this year they have partnered with vision Literacy to provide English as a Second Language classes to their employees. Arteaga's  has donated food to many causes and events in the community.

GILROY GARLIC FESTIVAL ASSOCIATION: The directors of the Gilroy Garlic Festival work tirelessly all year to organize 4,000 volunteers for the three-day annual festival. Since 1978, the festival has raised millions of dollars for local organizations, and participation has become a right of passage for all who live in Gilroy. The nominators wrote: "we want to give a special SHOUT OUT to our Garlic Festival Executive Staff for their continued dedication...."

MARLOWE BRINSON and KC ADAMS: In memory of their sons Myles Brinson and JR Adams, Marlowe and KC run an annual football camp combining athletics with character development and life skills for their campers. The camp includes not just football, but motivational speakers. They invite kids to participate whether or not their families can pay in order to provide opportunities for those who need them most.

K & S PROPERTIES:  K & S is a big and long-time supporter of non profits and youth athletics in our community. They donate countless gift baskets and bags each year to these organizations and also sponsor events downtown as well as providing security pro bono through the subsidiary K & S Security.

JIM WEST: The nomination says that "Jim West is a true servant leader. He is a humble servant to all of San Benito County" as has made his mark on a number of organizations, including San Benito County Parks and Recreation, San Benito County Chamber of Commerce, San Juan Bautista Rotary, Hazel Hawkins Hospital Foundation, Leadership San Benito County, Lights-On parade, and United Way of San Benito County. He helps out in any way he can, whether it is setting up for a meeting, running skill-building sessions, or driving his antique cars in a parade.

HOLLISTER DOWNTOWN ASSOCIATION: The Hollister Downtown Association organizes the events that bring the community together. these include the popular Lights On Celebration, Farmers Market, Street Festival and Car Show, the Downtown Club Program, Downtown Spring and Fall Cleanup, and this past summer's popular Free Movies Under the Stars. There is a large amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to make it all happen, and that makes it possible for people to come together and celebrate their community.
