Media alert: Full house for Autism Spectrum Disorder Workshop at Gavilan College - EVENT IS SOLD OUT

WHO: Elizabeth Zastrow and Karen Honkalam, Autism consultants and owners of STEPS -- Structured Teaching Environments Promoting Success, and special guest speaker Paul Nussbaum

WHAT: are providing a free training workshop for educators, support agencies, parents, employers, and adults with autism spectrum disorders. This training workshop is designed to facilitate a greater understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), viewing the world from an ASD perspective and will include "real-life" stories, small and large group activities, and discussion.

The event has generated strong interest. "All of our seats were taken within four days of opening up registration -- just through word of mouth" said Fran Lopez, Associate Dean of the Gavilan College Disability Resource Center. "It is clear this type of information is desperately wanted and needed in our district."

WHEN: Wednesday, October 27, 2010 from 9 a.m. -  3 p.m.

WHERE: Gavilan College Adapted Physical Education building, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd, Gilroy, CA 95020

WHY: The United States Center of Disease Control reports that one in 110 American children (and one in 70 boys) has been diagnosed with autism. According to, this represents a 600% increase over the past 20 years. Families, schools and employers are increasingly likely to be seeking support and information in working with these individuals.

This event is funded in part through a grant from the California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office through the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act.
