Become an E.K.G. Technician at Gavilan College Community Education

WHO: The Gavilan College department of Community and Contract Education, in Partnership with Boston Reed College

WHAT: The new Electrocardiography (EKG) Technician training program. This 70 hour course provides instruction in EKG unit operation and troubleshooting, lead placement utilizing a 12 lead EKG, use of EKG grid paper, recognizing normal and abnormal EKG patterns in all 12 leads, plotting an EKG axis, and Holter monitoring. 

Instruction will include lecture, individualized study, small group discussions, skills demonstrations, role play, small group projects, independent research, homework assignments, reading, and multimedia. Evaluation will include quizzes, workbook assignments, competency chack-off, a mid-term exam, and a final exam. Studetns will need the ability to print approximately 100 pages of handouts off the class website.

Upon successful completion of the course, graduates will receive our Certificate of Completion from Boston Reed College. Additionally, graduates will be qualified for the optional certification examination offered by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Certified Nursing Assistants  can earn 48 Continuing Education Units (CEU's.) This is a not-for-credit program and does not contribute to the attainment of an associates's degree.
WHEN: Class meets for 10 Saturdays, June 4-August 27, 2011. Class does not meet on July 2, 2011 - Independence Day Weekend, from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

WHERE: Room HU 102, Gavilan College campus, 5055 Santa Teresa Blvd., Gilroy CA

WHY: the Community Job Survey shows that EKG Technicians have a starting pay rate of $15 – $ 20 per hour. Health services are one of the largest industries in the country, with about 11.3 million jobs. Population trends show significant growth in the number of older Americans. This will increase the demand for EKG testing. In the US between 2008 and 2015, the Employment Development Department (EDD) Labor Market Information Division (LMID) has projected 19% growth for this profession.

HOW: Students must be at least 18 years old and have completed high school  or its equivalent. Students need competency in, or completion of a basic computer operations course and command of the English language. The course fee is $1,945.00  including textbook, workbook, consumable supplies, and certificate of completion.
