Train for a career in Aviation Maintenance at Gavilan College -- Classes start August 10

WHO: Students seeking careers in Aviation Maintenance Technology

WHAT: Can apply now for fall admission to the Gavilan College Aviation Maintenance program.  The aviation program is accredited by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and leads to a Certificate of Achievement (42-43 units) or an Associate of Science degree (70 units) for completion of the two-year program. The FAA requires a minimum of 1,150 hours of instruction, which will include both academic study and shop experience, to qualify for either an airframe license or a powerplant license. 1,900 hours are required to qualify for both, and students must pass the FAA Mechanics Examination to receive a license. Skills taught in this program also prepare graduates fro employment in fields such as welding, sheet metal, electrical systems, hydraulics, fuel systems, and automotive repair.

WHEN: Fall aviation classes start August 10. Open registration is now in effect.

WHERE: The Aviation Maintenance Program is in a temporary location on the Gilroy campus, with plans to move to the San Martin airport in 2012.

HOW: To register, go to, and click on "Apply and Enroll." New students must submit an application, take an assessment test, and complete on-line or in-person orientation prior to meeting with a counselor.  Due to high demand the process may take 7-10 days, so students are advised to get started as soon as possible. Fees are $36 per unit for California residents.
