Gavilan College hosts Lockheed Martin mentoring event

Lockheed Martin Executives Encourage College Students’ Pursuit of STEM Careers

Lockheed roundtableGilroy, Calif., Sept. 27, 2012 – Gavilan College hosted a Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] STEM mentoring activity with Gavilan College’s and San Jose State University’s Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement Schools (MESA) Programs on September 25, 2012. Eighty students and 21 members of Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company’s executive leadership team participated in four mentoring roundtable sessions focused on: Career Paths at an Engineering Technology Company, Industry Outlook and Business Overview, College and Career Experiences, and Diversity and Inclusion in the workplace on September 25, 2012 (photo attached).

Gavilan College student, Ernie Casarez, said, “The visit from Lockheed Martin was spectacular because it enlightened me to the advantages of Engineering. The Lockheed Martin executives opened my mind to a new journey I may soon take.” The opportunity to learn from the executive leadership team further inspired students like Cheyenne Tello to consider changing her major. One former Gavilan College student now working for Lockheed Martin, Michael Grace, addressed the group, telling the students about his own journey --starting college, then leaving to work in the trades, and then returning to Gavilan where he fell in love with math and engineering.

Gavilan College President Steve Kinsella said “Meeting with students at this stage of their academic preparation has a profound impact. I want to express my personal gratitude to Executive Vice President Macquire for her leadership in seeking out new sources of potential scientists and for finding and encouraging the next generation of scientists that exists at Gavilan College. Joanne M. Maguire, Executive Vice President of Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company stated, “Industry plays a vital role in STEM education and our nation’s future.  By investing in and mentoring students today, Lockheed Martin is helping to ensure our nation’s continued technological leadership and economic security. The diversity and caliber of students from Gavilan College’s and San Jose State University’s MESA Schools Programs pursuing STEM degrees was truly impressive, and I look forward to the best and brightest of these students wanting to work for Lockheed Martin someday.”

Lockheed Martin is celebrating its one hundredth year in business and is strongly rooted in the Bay Area; recruiting students from San Jose State University which partners with Gavilan College and other local two year colleges. Gavilan College serves its community by providing high quality educational and support services that prepare students for transfer, technical and public service careers, life-long learning and participation in a diverse global society. For over a decade, Gavilan College’s MESA Schools Program has been the only formal college support program in the Santa Clara and San Benito counties that empowers students to earn STEM based degrees.
