Gavilan College MESA Students Team Up with Cisco for Mentorship Program

MESA logoFive students from Gavilan College attended a shadow day last week at the networking giant’s San Jose headquarters to launch the year-long program. Cisco employees shared about the company and led tours. A panel of Cisco employees who are MESA alumni also answered student questions.

The Gavilan College MESA  students are among 30 specially chosen from six Northern California MESA centers. Riane Torres, Magalie  Bravo, Sokthea Mov, Tomas Hernandez,  and Brandon Mercado were picked to be among the first class of Cisco MESA mentees.

“ The Cisco Mentorship Shadow day was amazing! I had the opportunity to meet my mentor who is not only a women engineer, but a strong, independent and highly educated person who i know i will learn a lot from.” Said Bravo.

“I believe that this was a great opportunity for us to prepare ourselves for our future careers. The day was a great experience and I'm glad I had the chance to meet my awesome mentor. I feel like there is a lot I am going to learn over the duration of this mentorship. Thanks again MESA for such a golden opportunity!“ Said Mercado

The mentees and mentors will meet monthly online or in person for one year to discuss career interests, leadership, and to work on projects. The pairs were carefully chosen based on major and career interests and sign an agreement as part of the year-long commitment. In addition to Gavilan College, there are participants from MESA centers at Cañada College, Hartnell College, Mission College, UC Santa Cruz and San Jose State.

The Cisco mentorship program is an example of MESA’s strong partnership with industry, which is a significant contributor to its success.

MESA is one of the largest programs in the state to support educationally disadvantaged students so they can graduate from college with science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) degrees. MESA provides academic support and enrichment to more than 20,000 K-12 students and more than 7,800 community college and university students each year.
