Lockheed-Martin Discover-Engineering supports Gilroy STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) programs with visit to local schools

STEM Students at Gavilan College and South Valley Middle School will learn about careers in engineering from Lockheed Martin Discover-E Volunteers

WHO: Lockheed-Martin Discover-E engineers Albert Pham, a Software Engineer who holds a BS from Portland State & an MS from Carnegie Mello University and Mechanical Engineer Mike Grace, a Gavilan College and San Jose State University alumnus with multiple honors who works on the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense propulsion system assembly
WHAT: will visit local schools to provide engineering experiences and insights for hundreds of Gilroy area students enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Science (STEM) programs. This is the second year a team of Lockheed Martin Discover-E speakers has visited with Gavilan College STEM students. Last year’s event helped students experience some of the ways engineering teams use STEM, problem solving and communication skills.

This year’s expanding team of Gilroy area educators agree that the event has many benefits. Gavilan College CGD Instructor Colette Marie McLaughlin feels the most valuable aspect of this opportunity is the potential for "increased interdisciplinary collaboration to help students better integrate knowledge from all subject areas and acquire 21st century skills necessary to solve real-world problems, such as critical thinking, communication, and creativity."

John Heyl, and instructor at Gilroy Early College Academy (GECA) who teaches Senior Project and AP Language classes characterized the collaborative event as "an engaging way for students to gain expert advice to prepare and plan for their desired career goals."
South Valley Middle School science teacher Sappho Chow said that  “Discover-E volunteers’ hands-on activities for my 238 science and dozens of Gavilan College students will help students see relevance in classes they are taking and inspire some to prepare for rewarding engineering careers.”
TWO EVENTS on Friday 27 Sept. 2013
8:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. for Sappho Chow’s South Valley Middle School science students
2:30 - 4 p.m. for Gavilan College and GECA Students interested in Engineering. Gilroy Campus Tentative: PS 102
These events are the result of a collaborative efforts of Lockheed Martin Discover-E volunteers with faculty in programs that educate students in STEM, including Gavilan College’s Computer Graphics and Design (CGD), Gilroy Early College Academy (GECA), Gavilan College Engineering, Gavilan College MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement) and Sappho Chow’s South Valley Middle School science classes.
