Gavilan College to host "POD" for Statewide Medical Health Exercise

Staff and students of Gavilan College will be among the volunteers participating in the  2014 Statewide Medical Health Exercise on November 20, 2014 from 8:30am-11:30am in the Student Centre at the Gavilan College Gilroy campus. This event will be  a full scale exercise, complete with Point of Dispensing (POD) staff and simulated clients.

The Santa Clara County Health Department will be coordinating this drill.  The exercise scenario will involve a simulated anthrax outbreak. The drill will involve Santa Clara County Public Health, Santa Clara County Deputy Sheriff Office, the Gilroy Fire Department, the County Emergency Response Team (CERT),  Disaster Service Workers, and Gavilan College students and staff. The Gavilan POD will be activated, with volunteers playing the role of patients and staff.

Nursing department students will serve as simulation staff, and will help to test the intake forms developed for this type of situation.  In the event of an actual widespread health emergency, the Student Center at Gavilan College could be activated as a Point of Dispensing (POD) to provide medication to the public to prevent illness. This exercise will test the procedures that would be used in an actual event.
