Course Description

A developmental view of children's language and literacy learning in a framework of children's literature. Students will be presented with steps in children's literacy learning in order to help them organize classrooms and plan activities to support the growth of writing and reading. Students will study historical trends in children's literature and participate in practical experiences and activities that use a wide range of techniques and materials for advancing language comprehension and usage. This course has the option of a letter grade or pass/no pass. ADVISORY: Eligible for English 250 and English 260.

Learning Outcomes

  • Select and evaluate appropriate developmental reading books and materials for young children.
  • Present children's books, using audio-visual materials,and other teaching aids
  • Select and present literature and other language arts materials to young children to assist them in working through difficult life situations.
  • Develop and compile a children's literature bibliography
  • Identify different language communication styles
  • Create and use flannelboard stories and other language materials to augment stories and plays
  • Describe how literature supports children's personality development, social and moral development, and aesthetic and creative development.
  • Plan a language arts literature program for young children.
  • Identify and utilize components for an anti-bias language arts program for diverse populations including children with special needs.
