Course Description

Introduces the student to realistic and effective strategies for guiding all young children's behavior. This course demonstrates best practices for establishing and maintaining age and developmentally-appropriate productive behaviors among all children in a classroom setting. Course topics include environmental, developmental and special needs sources of maladaptive and challenging behaviors, guidelines for selecting and implementing strategies for positive behavior change for all children, and developing healthy communication strategies with families, program staff and children. ADVISORY: Eligible for English 1A.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will identify social, environmental and individual antecedents to and consequences of challenging, destructive and maladaptive behaviors in all children.
  • Students will build strategies and personal communication skills that build positive relationships with children, parents and paraprofessionals.
  • Students will develop strategies for positive approaches to reduce or eliminate challenging, destructive and maladaptive behaviors in all children.
  • Students will design and modify classroom environments to support and encourage adaptive and cooperative behaviors in all children.
  • Students will select and offer community resources to support functional and healthy child development.
  • Students will practice presenting observation data and recommendations for improving behavior to staff, parents and paraprofessionals in a role play simulation.
