Course Description

Interaction of social, emotional, intellectual, and physical attributes related to the development and realization of human potential across the life span. (C-ID: PSY 180) PREREQUISITE: Eligible for English 1A.


Learning Outcomes

  • Student will describe major theoretical traditions in developmental psychology. Student will identify common patterns of development, including specific milestone achievements in different areas of development (physical, cognitive, social and emotional) through the life span.
  • Student will discuss impact of concepts from one area of development (i.e. physical, cognitive, social and emotional) on other areas. (All methods of assessment)
  • Student will evaluate relevance of concepts from major theoretical traditions as they apply to specific issues in human development.
  • Student will compare and contrast information from scientific research with information from personal experience and original research related to current issues in human development.
  • Student will evaluate usefulness of the application of scientific research to current issues in human development. 2, 1, 3, 4, 6
  • Student will demonstrate research skills through writing and technology.
  • Student will apply interactional model of nature/nurture to specific issues.
  • Student will outline an argument that synthesizes individual, family and societal factors that impact on a current topic of interest in developmental psychology.
  • Student will compare evidence regarding treatment of children in the U.S. to cultural myths regarding the value and treatment of children, including evaluating current, specific practices to determine which values are being implemented.
  • Student will identify important cultural variations in different areas of development (physical, cognitive, social and emotional) through the life span.
