ESL552:  ADV ESL READ/VOC I


Course Description

This course focuses on academic and critical thinking skills needed to increase reading comprehension and efficiency. Emphasis is on analyzing, making inferences, taking notes, supporting opinions, summarizing and expanding vocabulary. Readings are from academic texts and literature. PREREQUISITE: ESL 542 with a grade of 'C' or better or ESL assessment recommendation. Recommended concurrent enrollment in ESL 553 and 554.

  • Improve reading comprehension and efficiency through the application of various reading strategies
  • Use context clues to guess at new vocabulary
  • Identify main idea and details; summarize a reading
  • Make inferences and draw conclusions
  • Describe, explain, compare&contrast information, identify problems and create solutions
  • Identify author's tone, perspective and purpose
  • Express and support opinions with examples
  • Use an English-English dictionary to select accurate definitions and appropriate parts of speech
  • Take notes and organize information in lists, flow-charts and outlines
  • Read and analyze a novel and write a book report
  • Conduct brief survey and record and analyze data
  • Do brief on-line search and report findings to the class
