Course Description

Designed for hazardous materials emergency responders. Emphasizes application of topics learned in Hazardous Materials 1A. Includes the use of filed monitoring and detection devices, sample collection of equipment, and field identification procedures for verifying identifying and classifying unknown chemicals. PREREQUISITE: Hazardous Materials 1A (JFT 18A). ADVISORY: Eligible for English 250 and English 420.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will describe the process of identifying unknown solids and liquids using wither the HazCat Field Identification or the Five Step Substance Field Identification System
  • Recognize the nine different DOT hazard classes, the characteristics and hazards of each, and the safety precautions response personnel should take to protect themselves and others who might be affected by exposure to these chemicals.
  • Identify basic principles of chemical incompatibility.
